The administration of US President Donald Trump is exploring the possibility of promoting former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as the next secretary-general of the United Nations, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal and news outlet Walla, citing sources from three countries.

According to the reports, American officials have approached Orbán to propose the idea. Orbán expressed interest, but a final decision on whether to launch a candidacy has not yet been made.

Additionally, as reported by Maariv and The Jerusalem Post, Washington assesses based on prior discussions that Orbán's candidacy could also secure backing from Russia and China, potentially making him a consensus candidate supported by all three veto-wielding powers on the Security Council.
