US and Iran Hold Mediated Talks on Sidelines of UN General Assembly

Delegations from both countries met in New York for the first time since June, amid sharp rhetoric from President Trump.

Representatives from the United States and Iran held lengthy mediated talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, aimed at ending the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera and the Financial Times reported. It was the first such meeting between the sides since June, in an effort to break the diplomatic deadlock.

According to the BBC and the Financial Times, US President Donald Trump stated that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had a "good meeting" with the Iranian delegation. However, in his address to the assembly, Trump threatened Iran with annihilation if a deal is not reached.
